What do I need to do to get my license?? And what are the beliefs in ham radio with storm spotting?? I've been looking at on-line classes, with ARRL but..would it be better with an ham radio group??
Thanks,
Rodney

You need to study for the test, have two pieces of ID - one w/ photo, and the test fee. In my area we activate SkyWarn and do quite a bit of weather reporting to the NWS. We do really a bit during this time of season with t-storms and hurricanes. I would suggest doing the studying with a ham group just to get the "know how" first hand. If you are one of those that don't like classroom settings then online would the the way to go for you. I, myself, have preferred the group over anything else.

I agree with Jacob, the preference is to study with one of your local ham groups. They will be able to answer you questions as you have them and it will give you an insite on how your local Skywarn operates, procedure-wise.

Good Luck!

If you have a friend who is a ham radio operator, then he/she might be able to help you too.

Good luck!

Good Luck...If you can find yourself an Elmer (more experienced Ham) he/she will take you under their wing and help you as you take the step to getting your Tech License.

This is great info, but I wasn't sure if Jasmine realized that she had replied to a thread over a year old ;)

Thanks for the great information!! No ham license let, Crawford County does not have local Skywarn net. But I hope soon..New 911 system coming in next year so that may change.

Rodney,

These are good sites to help study with. I am relatively new to HAM, only have had my license for a few months. They have good sample tests to use. I used them alot, and passed the technician level 1st try. Also, the advice above is good. I went to a 1 day class, sponsored by several local radio clubs. It was very helpful getting an in person explanation for some of the parts of the ARRL book I didn't understand.

Here are the practice tests:

EDIT: Also, found a listing here http://members.aol.com/rscswp/swlist.htm for Crawford County SkyWARN in Missouri? Link seems to have gone bad, but based off the Springfield, Missouri search, came up with a link to this group, Not sure if its near you or not. http://www.smarc.org/skywarn/ -73-
